Siberian Huskies are considered to be a medium-sized working dog breed. They are similar in appearance to the Alaskan Malamute, although smaller in size. The average male weighs 45-60 pounds, while the average female weighs 35-50 pounds. The average lifespan is 12-14 years. They originated in Northeast Asia by the Chukchi people, where they were used for sled-pulling, guarding, and companionship.
A Russian fur trader introduced them to Alaska during the Nome Gold Rush. They have a thick double coat, which allows them to survive in the extreme cold of the Siberian Arctic. These dogs are very active and energetic, and have been described as “escape artists” for their ability to dig under, chew through, or jump over fences. They usually howl instead of barking.
They have special exercise needs and require frequent companionship. They are good with children, and with training can be trusted with other small animals.
